Pilgrimage Travel Info

DIRECTIONS: The distance from Los Angeles to Manzanar is approximately 210 miles, one way. The trip to Manzanar will take about 4-1/2 hours, including stops. The annual pilgrimage is held at the northwest corner of the former campsite--near the cemetery monument. The entrance for the pilgrimage is at the Guard House.

DRESS: Wear comfortable walking shoes, layers of clothing which can be removed or added if the weather changes. Bring a hat and sunglasses. Dust and high winds are possible. The altitude is 3,500-4,000 feet above sea level. Drinking water will be provided. Sanitized toilets will be on site.

BUS FROM LOS ANGELES: For those interested in taking the bus from Los Angeles, a bus sponsored by The Manzanar Committee, will be leaving Little Tokyo by 7 am. Cost for the bus is $20 and must be prepaid. To make bus reservations, send check to: Manzanar Committee, P.O. Box 9489, Marina Del Rey, CA 90295. No phone reservations. Check the website for added bus info.

MANZANAR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: On the day of the pilgrimage, the Interpretive Center will be open from 8am - 6pm. The Grand Opening dedication is at 1:30 pm. Parking is limited--shuttle buses from the cemetery to the auditorium begins at 12:45 pm. For info call 760.878-2932 or see www.nps.gov/manz/home.htm.

EASTERN CALIFORNIA MUSEUM: Be sure to visit the Eastern California Museum in Independence (see map) where an extensive exhibit on Manzanar is on permanent display. Museum admission is free. Museum hours are 10 am to 4 pm. For info, call 760.878-0258.

MANZANAR AFTER DARK: The evening program is held at the American Legion Hall in Independence at 6:30 pm. Share stories, experiences, inter-generational discussions, poetry, open mic, etc! Co-sponsored by Education in Action. For info, email Jenni Kuida at manzcomm[at]yahoo[dot]com.
